Update from the Department for Education
“The Department for Education has today announced a brand-new GCSE British Sign Language qualification. The GCSE will be a combination of learning how to sign and gaining a comprehensive understanding of the history of sign language in Britain, and we aim for the GCSE to be available for first teaching from September 2025.
We are launching a consultation to obtain wider public views on the content in the course, as it is really important that the deaf community and people who having hearing loss have a say in how they think it should be run. It is also important that more people learn how to sign, and so this course isn鈥檛 just for the deaf community, it is for everyone.
